{"id":55795,"date":"2025-01-28T03:53:39","date_gmt":"2025-01-28T03:53:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/innodebt.com\/?p=55795"},"modified":"2025-01-28T03:53:40","modified_gmt":"2025-01-28T03:53:40","slug":"asia-tech-stocks-slide-in-wake-of-wall-street-rout","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/innodebt.com\/?p=55795","title":{"rendered":"Asia tech stocks slide in wake of Wall Street rout"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Unlock the Editor\u2019s Digest for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\"><span>Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=bff03ccb-2655-41cc-8301-bd02d493e0ef\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>Japanese markets extended their slide on Tuesday as the heavy sell-off in technology stocks headed into a second day, driven in part by the overnight plunge in chipmaker Nvidia\u2019s shares.<\/p>\n<p>Nvidia lost $589bn of market value on Monday in a historic fall, as Wall Street and in Silicon Valley panicked over a perceived threat from Chinese start-up DeepSeek to the continued dominance of the US in AI and the need to invest hundreds of billions of dollars in underlying infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Japan\u2019s tech-heavy Nikkei 225 fell by as much as 1.7 per cent on Tuesday morning in Tokyo, before recovering to a decline of 0.6 per cent. The broader Topix, which has lower weightings for Japan\u2019s tech exporters, rose 0.5 per cent. <\/p>\n<p>In Hong Kong, shares in Chinese tech companies recorded gains on Tuesday, although chipmaker SMIC was down more than 2 per cent after the open. <\/p>\n<p>Tokyo-listed shares in SoftBank Group were hard-hit, plunging more than 5.2 per cent in early trading and extending their fall this week to around 12 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts said SoftBank was especially affected by the overnight 10 per cent plunge in shares of Arm Holdings \u2014 the US-listed chip design company in which the Japanese group holds an 88 per cent stake.<\/p>\n<p>Even after this week\u2019s crash, SoftBank shares are more than 43 per cent higher than in August, said Kirk Boodry, an analyst who covers the company at Astris Advisory in Tokyo, noting the stock\u2019s high volatility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt looks horrible now, but it\u2019s probably normal for SoftBank,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s another of its round trips, where you get a big bump then it comes down to earth.\u201d Boodry continues to rate the company as a \u201cbuy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, founder Masayoshi Son, accompanied US President Donald Trump at the unveiling of the Stargate joint venture, involving SoftBank, Oracle and OpenAI in a $100bn data centre investment that they said could stretch to $500bn over four years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>DeepSeek\u2019s promise of a much lower-cost AI model has raised the question of whether Son\u2019s photo-op announcement \u201cmarked the peak of the AI capex boom\u201d, said Jefferies strategist Chris Wood.<\/p>\n<p>The selling in Tokyo was focused on Disco, Advantest and Furukawa Electric \u2014 stocks that had soared in recent months on the expectation of expanding demand for high-end chips and data centres to power artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>Shares in Disco and Furukawa were down 3 per cent and 7.5 per cent respectively on Tuesday morning. Advantest plunged over 10 per cent in the first 20 minutes of trading.<\/p>\n<p>The sell-off expanded to include companies such as Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Hitachi and Kawasaki Heavy Industries. Until recently, they had traded higher on the bet that they would benefit from higher overall investment in AI-linked electricity infrastructure.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The US dollar recovered by 0.3 per cent against a basket of currencies in morning trading, while the yen weakened to \u00a5155.30 per greenback.<\/p>\n<p>Hong Kong\u2019s Hang Seng benchmark opened up 0.4 per cent on Tuesday, led by Tencent, Alibaba and Baidu.<\/p>\n<p>South Korea and Taiwan are closed for the Lunar New Year holiday, while Hong Kong ceases trading at the end of the morning session.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Read the full article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/bff03ccb-2655-41cc-8301-bd02d493e0ef\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Unlock the Editor\u2019s Digest for free Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.
