{"id":55762,"date":"2025-01-24T03:45:25","date_gmt":"2025-01-24T03:45:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/innodebt.com\/?p=55762"},"modified":"2025-01-24T03:45:26","modified_gmt":"2025-01-24T03:45:26","slug":"bank-of-japan-raises-interest-rate-to-around-0-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/innodebt.com\/?p=55762","title":{"rendered":"Bank of Japan raises interest rate to \u2018around\u2019 0.5%"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Unlock the Editor\u2019s Digest for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\"><span>Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=64b10555-4ed6-484e-8f7b-b43c71e21f8e\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>The Bank of Japan has raised short-term interest rates to \u201caround 0.5 per cent\u201d in a well-signalled move that extends the country\u2019s monetary policy \u201cnormalisation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The central bank\u2019s decision by a vote of 8-1 to increase rates from 0.25 per cent lifted the policy rate to its highest level in 17 years and followed weeks of speculation over whether governor Kazuo Ueda would delay the move until there was stronger evidence of rising Japanese wages and sustainable inflation.<\/p>\n<p>The yen, which had been edging higher against the dollar in the weeks running up to the BoJ\u2019s meeting, was flat on Friday, but traders said they were \u201cready for anything\u201d when Ueda delivers his press conference in the afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>The BoJ\u2019s previous rate rise in July, which surprised most analysts, triggered a phase of extreme volatility in currency and equity markets<\/p>\n<p>Several hours before the BoJ concluded its two-day monetary policy meeting on Friday, a report from the internal affairs ministry showed Japan\u2019s core consumer prices rose 3 per cent in December from a year earlier.<\/p>\n<p>The growth, partly driven by the cutting of government energy subsidies and partly by high rice prices, marked the highest annual pace of inflation in 16 months.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Read the full article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/64b10555-4ed6-484e-8f7b-b43c71e21f8e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Unlock the Editor\u2019s Digest for free Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.
