{"id":55679,"date":"2025-01-14T03:29:03","date_gmt":"2025-01-14T03:29:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/innodebt.com\/?p=55679"},"modified":"2025-01-14T03:29:03","modified_gmt":"2025-01-14T03:29:03","slug":"los-angeles-braces-for-explosive-fire-growth-as-high-winds-near","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/innodebt.com\/?p=55679","title":{"rendered":"Los Angeles braces for \u2018explosive fire growth\u2019 as high winds near"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Unlock the Editor\u2019s Digest for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\"><span>Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=13049fb9-2c4f-4bac-bf0d-61cf52d0adc4\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>Los Angeles was braced for near \u201churricane force\u201d winds on Monday that weather forecasters said could fan the devastating wildfires that have swept across southern California as damage estimates mounted.<\/p>\n<p>As firefighters struggled to contain the deadly blazes that continued to rage in the suburbs of the US\u2019s second-largest city, the National Weather Service issued a \u201cred flag alert\u201d warning amid deteriorating conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Winds of up to 75 miles an hour were expected to hit the region from Monday night until Wednesday morning, according to the NWS, combining with extremely dry conditions to create \u201ccritical fire weather\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe National Weather Service is predicting close to hurricane-force level winds, and so we\u2019re making urgent preparations,\u201d LA mayor Karen Bass said on Monday. \u201cMy top priority, and the priority of everyone else, is to do everything we can to protect lives as these winds approach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Authorities have since last Tuesday battled blazes that have burnt more than 40,000 acres of land. California governor Gavin Newsom warned the fires could become the costliest disaster in US history as he clashed with president-elect Donald Trump over the state\u2019s response. <\/p>\n<p>The cause of the fires has not yet been determined,\u00a0but several lawsuits were filed against utility Southern California Edison on Monday alleging it had failed to properly shut off power lines despite warnings, leading to the outbreak of the Eaton fire. <\/p>\n<p>Shares in its parent Edison International fell 11.9 per cent on Monday. <\/p>\n<p>A Southern California Edison spokesperson said: \u201cSCE understands that a lawsuit related to the Eaton fire has been filed but has not yet been served with the complaint,\u201d adding that the company \u201cwill review the complaint when it is received. The cause of the fire continues to be under investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Insurance stocks were also hit as anticipated damages mounted. Wells Fargo analysts estimated insurance losses could top $30bn and potentially reach as much as $40bn. On Friday, JPMorgan analysts had pencilled in an industry-wide hit of $20bn, a level that would already have been the largest in the state\u2019s history.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, Newsom said he was proposing $2.5bn in additional emergency funding to aid LA in the recovery, clean-up and reopening of schools.\u00a0\u201cCalifornia is organising a Marshall Plan to help Los Angeles rebuild faster and stronger,\u201d he said in a statement. The funding will need to be approved by the state legislature.<\/p>\n<p>The largest of the outbreaks, the Pacific Palisades fire, was just 14 per cent contained late on Monday, prompting fears that strong gusts in the coming days would reverse progress in combating the blazes.<\/p>\n<p>The weather service warned that \u201cextreme fire danger\u201d would continue until Wednesday and said that the category of alert in place \u2014 a \u201cparticularly dangerous situation red flag warning\u201d \u2014 was reserved for \u201cextreme of the extreme fire weather scenarios\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn other words, this set-up is about as bad as it gets,\u201d the NWS warned as it cautioned powerful winds could create \u201cexplosive fire growth\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The death toll hit 24 on Monday, officials said, and was expected to climb as authorities combed through the wreckage in search of missing people. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"n-content-image n-content-image--full\" data-component=\"image-set\"><picture><source media=\"(min-width: 700px)\"  width=\"2290\" height=\"1527\"><\/source><source media=\"(max-width: 490px)\"  width=\"1527\" height=\"1527\"><\/source><\/picture><figcaption class=\"n-content-picture__caption\"><span>Firefighters work to clear a firebreak on a hillside covered with retardant in an attempt to contain the Palisades fire<\/span><span> <!-- -->\u00a9 Ringo Chiu\/Reuters<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The disaster has spilled over into the political arena, with Trump on Sunday attacking the state\u2019s authorities for failing to halt the destruction. \u201cThe fires are still raging in L.A. The incompetent pols have no idea how to put them out,\u201d he posted on his Truth Social network. <\/p>\n<p>The incoming Republican president has accused California\u2019s governor, a Democrat, of depleting water reserves to protect an endangered species of fish, and of refusing to sign a \u201cwater restoration declaration\u201d.
