Tencent\u2019s US-listed shares closed down 7.8 per cent following the news.<\/p>\n<p>The list is part of Washington\u2019s broad efforts to counteract the rise of China as a military superpower.<\/p>\n<p>CATL, the world\u2019s biggest battery maker, was also added to the Pentagon\u2019s list. The manufacturer, which is an important supplier to electric-vehicle maker Tesla, has a global EV battery market share of about 38 per cent. Its shares in mainland China opened down 3 per cent on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The Pentagon has described the list as a way to highlight and counter what it calls China\u2019s \u201cmilitary-civil fusion strategy\u201d, which bolsters the Chinese military\u2019s modernisation efforts by ensuring it can acquire advanced technology from Chinese companies, universities and research programmes that are masked as civilian entities.<\/p>\n<p>The US has imposed multiple rounds of sweeping export controls designed to curtail China\u2019s ability to make an advanced semiconductor industry and make it more difficult for Beijing to develop artificial intelligence for military use.<\/p>\n<p>In retaliation, Beijing has been tightening its own export controls. Last month it banned shipments to the US of certain minerals and metals used in semiconductor manufacturing and military hardware. <\/p>\n<p>Being added to the Pentagon\u2019s Chinese military companies blacklist has no direct legal ramifications and does not result in sanctions. However, it does carry reputational risks. <\/p>\n<p>Tencent\u2019s addition to the list \u201cis clearly a mistake\u201d, a company spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are not a military company or supplier. Unlike sanctions or export controls, this listing has no impact on our business. We will nonetheless work with the Department of Defense to address any misunderstanding,\u201d the spokesperson added.<\/p>\n<p>CATL, which has been working with Tesla and Ford to license its battery manufacturing technology for factories in the US, also called its inclusion\u00a0on the list \u201ca mistake\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCATL is not engaged in any military related activities\u201d, the company said. \u201cWe welcome responsible discourse on our business operations and take questions about our business seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chip manufacturer Changxin Memory Technologies, drone-maker Autel Robotics and IT equipment maker Quectel Wireless were also added to the list.<\/p>\n<p>Beginning next year, companies on the list will not be able to do business with the Pentagon, potentially affecting those that are in the defence supply chain.<\/p>\n<p>The Pentagon will not be able to contract companies on the list beginning in June 2026, and from 2027 will not be able to procure goods or services that include the listed companies in their supply chains.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Read the full article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/27abe77e-af9d-4c61-abbf-22964de7b0bb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Stay informed with free updates Simply sign up to the US-China relations myFT Digest &#8212; delivered directly to your inbox.
