The activity has rocked the Reykjanes peninsula \u2014 home to Iceland\u2019s international airport and the Blue Lagoon tourist site, which has been closed since Thursday. <\/p>\n<p>The mid-Atlantic island of 390,000 people is well used to volcanic eruptions, with several occurring close to Grindav\u00edk in recent years. The eruption of Eldfell destroyed several hundred homes on the southern island of Heimaey in 1973, though there were no fatalities.<\/p>\n<p>The 2010 explosion at Eyjafjallaj\u00f6kull closed much of European airspace for almost a week after plumes of ash clouds spread south. Volcanologists said there is a lower risk of a big ash cloud from this volcano, but that one was possible if eruptions occur at sea.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"n-content-image n-content-image--full\"><picture><source media=\"(min-width: 700px)\"  width=\"2146\" height=\"1430\"><\/source><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/innodebt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/https:\/\/d1e00ek4ebabms.cloudfront.net\/production\/c7997623-bcbd-4516-8246-dafa3798a806.jpg\" alt=\"Crack in road caused by volcanic activity\" data-image-type=\"image\" width=\"2146\" height=\"1430\"><\/picture><figcaption class=\"n-content-picture__caption\"><span>Large cracks have opened up on roads in and around the town of Grindav\u00edk, which has been evacuated <\/span><span> <!-- -->\u00a9 RUV\/Ragnar Visage via Reuters<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Grindav\u00edk is only 19km from Keflavik airport, Iceland\u2019s main international entry point, but flights are carrying on largely as normal. <\/p>\n<p>Huge cracks have appeared in roads around Grindav\u00edk. Authorities said on Sunday that it should be safe for residents to return to collect essentials and evacuate pets and livestock, subject to close monitoring. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI felt the most scared for my life I have ever been,\u201d said American basketball player Danielle Rodriguez, who lives in Grindav\u00edk, about the evacuation on social media platform X, formerly Twitter. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ground started shaking so much I had to grab a hold of the car and honest to god for a good 30 seconds I felt as though the ground was going to crack open and take us both [her girlfriend and her],\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"n-content-image n-content-image--full\"><picture><source media=\"(min-width: 700px)\"  width=\"1458\" height=\"948\"><\/source><source media=\"(max-width: 490px)\"  width=\"625\" height=\"833\"><\/source><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/innodebt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/https:\/\/d6c748xw2pzm8.cloudfront.net\/prod\/6ab80a70-815a-11ee-9815-19c8494b0fb4-standard.png\" alt=\"Locator map of Iceland pinpointing the Fagradalsfjall volcano nearby town of Grindavik, capital Reykjavik, and Keflavik International Airport\n\" data-image-type=\"graphic\" width=\"1458\" height=\"948\"><\/picture><\/figure>\n<p>Experts said that an eruption could happen at any time, and that the current seismic activity made such event likely but not guaranteed\u00a0in the coming days. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe overall assessment from the status meeting was that the likelihood of a volcanic eruption is high, and that an eruption could be possible on a timescale of just days,\u201d the Icelandic Met Office said on Saturday night. <\/p>\n<p>It added that the magma intrusion was slowly moving towards the surface and was currently estimated to be 800 metres below the ground.
