It may already be happening."},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-editable=\"content\" itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-reorderable=\"content\">\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/closubfcw00022e6985sa1yqp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      A worrisome sign for the Federal Reserve is starting to emerge.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloncq42u00c4g7qqexnaf3sr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      The Fed keeps a close eye on several risks that could make its job of taming inflation even more difficult, such as red-hot consumer demand keeping some upward pressure on prices and the possible effects of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East on oil prices.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloncr2if00032e69gnh7v4nx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      But the US central bank also pays close attention to whether Americans still have faith inflation will eventually return to normal. That faith seems to be eroding.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/closvbkxy000d2e69g6n37ly9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      The University of Michigan\u2019s latest consumer survey released Friday showed that Americans\u2019 long-run inflation expectations rose to 3.2% this month, the highest level since 2011.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/closudkz900042e69vhpnsjly@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      And those perceptions could continue to get worse the longer it takes the Fed get inflation back to its 2% target. Fed officials don\u2019t expect inflation to reach 2% until 2026, according to their latest economic projections released in September.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clonczzh600112e697hzf0ejb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      If there\u2019s one thing that would make the Fed quake in its boots, it would be worsening inflation expectations.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloncr4lz00062e69z3mpq8ut@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cIf we find that consumers or businesses are really starting to feel like that long-term level of inflation \u2026 is creeping up, if that\u2019s their expectation, we\u2019ve got to act and we\u2019ve got to get that under control,\u201d Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic told Bloomberg earlier this month.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloncr6gr00082e69xwgqa227@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      If Americans lose faith that inflation can ever return to normal that would prompt the Fed to tighten monetary policy even more \u2014 either by raising interest rates or keeping them elevated for much longer than expected.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/closyqagc00052e69chdtfmp1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      The Fed\u2019s benchmark lending rate is currently at a 22-year high and investors already expect the central bank to keep rates higher for longer.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloncr8es000a2e693g55ihle@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cI worked at the Fed for six years and if inflation expectations are drifting higher and they\u2019re not under control, the Fed absolutely will act,\u201d Luke Tilley, chief economist at Wilmington Trust Investment Advisors, told CNN.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clot2aghb00012e699g1l6zjk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cThat is the one thing that gives them trouble sleeping at night. They don\u2019t lose sleep over recessions because they come and go, but they do lose sleep over long-term inflation expectations drifting higher,\u201d he said.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloncrbp4000c2e69pb5tyyu9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      It\u2019s unclear if inflation expectations will continue to worsen, and the Fed looks at a broad range of surveys, not just the University of Michigan\u2019s. But the university\u2019s survey is one of the most closely watched by investors and economists.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/closwvevd000u2e690a710pam@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      The Fed specifically focuses on long-run inflation expectations and Fed Chair Jerome Powell makes it a point to mention the state of Americans\u2019 inflation perceptions at every news conference after officials set monetary policy (which happens eight times a year.)\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/closvho6c000g2e69pfv5vh4f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      During his most recent post-meeting presser earlier this month after officials voted to hold rates steady, Powell said \u201clonger-term inflation expectations appear to remain well anchored.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloncrosm000k2e69n3n4f599@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      But the clock is ticking, inflation remains well above 2% and some economists believe the last mile of the Fed\u2019s inflation fight might be the most difficult.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/closv74ph000b2e69lri4cdre@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cI remain willing to support raising the federal funds rate at a future meeting should the incoming data indicate that progress on inflation has stalled or is insufficient to bring inflation down to 2% in a timely way,\u201d Fed Governor Michelle Bowman, one the Fed\u2019s most hawkish officials, said last week at a New York Bankers Association forum in Palm Beach, Florida.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/closw02p100012e693n3s9c35@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      The keyword there is \u201ctimely.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloncrupo000o2e69vhmopjot@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Sticky inflation could possibly \u201cun-anchor\u201d inflation expectations or elicit a consistent deterioration in Americans\u2019 perception on inflation. But it\u2019s unclear how long it would take for persistently high inflation to cause that.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/closyhan100022e69g1bs19qc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Tilley said \u201cthe Fed is being way too pessimistic\u201d in expecting inflation not to reach 2% until 2026.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloncrysm000q2e69ng3a15l6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      At the end of the day, the Fed just needs to maintain confidence that the inflation monster will someday go away, and inflation\u2019s steady slowdown over the past year has so far helped in that regard, according to the New York Fed.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clondncmc00152e69kvfg66jx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      A recent analysis from the bank on consumers\u2019 perspectives on inflation showed that \u201cconsumers today know enough about the Federal Reserve to recognize its policies as the most important factor behind the recent and expected future decline in inflation.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clondrq8d001a2e69e706zzxj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      The Fed perhaps just needs to continue to prove that it is making progress in its historic inflation fight.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloncs0qu000s2e69y68lhd25@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cI think 2% is just a number because what\u2019s more meaningful is the direction of travel rather than where they get to before the trip is over,\u201d Drew Matus, chief market strategist at MetLife Investment Management, told CNN. \u201cThe Fed really just wants people to not expect inflation will run at 4% forever.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clonct6lx000x2e697y2to2lh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      So what\u2019s kept inflation expectations in check this long? Matus said it might just be nostalgia.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clonctp10000z2e69kmbe5prt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cPeople want to believe the future will be like the good old past because it\u2019s something that the brain can get itself around,\u201d he said. \u201cThey\u2019re trying to actualize their memory when things were more affordable and what the Fed really has to watch out for is the risk of a shock to inflation right now.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/closvnpvw000l2e698spg2gxw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      If you are someone who likes to plan ahead on your taxes, the IRS this week released the new inflation-adjusted income tax brackets and standard deduction amounts that will be in effect for tax year 2024.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/closvo6l3000n2e696nwnq5qa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Translation: These are the numbers that will be relevant to the tax return most Americans will file in early 2025, my colleague Jeanne Sahadi reports.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/closvo6l4000p2e69vbn2m8xk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      The IRS makes inflation adjustments annually to tax brackets, the standard deduction and some other tax breaks.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/closvo6l4000r2e69cye7w7ol@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      For individuals and married people filing separately, the new  federal standard deduction will increase to $14,600, up from $13,850  this year.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/closvo6l4000s2e69exa9lt6q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      For married couples filing jointly, the standard deduction will rise to $29,200, up from $27,700 currently.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/closvo6l4000t2e69o6r46wse@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      And for people who file as head of household, the standard deduction will be $21,900, up from $20,800 today.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/closvo6l4000u2e690hpu2seu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Most filers claim the standard deduction. Others will itemize their deductions because taken together, they add up to more than the standard deduction.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/closvo6l4000v2e695p2fdxx8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      For example, if you are a single filer and your mortgage interest,  charitable contributions and allowable portion of your state and local  incomes taxes come to more than $14,600 in 2024, you likely would  itemize your deductions to save more on your taxes.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/closvqkjx000z2e697rphxyx1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      <strong>Monday:<\/strong> Earnings from Tyson Foods. Fed Governor Lisa Cook delivers remarks.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/closw2a8a00062e69yi01bkv2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      <strong>Tuesday:<\/strong> Earnings from Home Depot. The US Labor Department releases its Consumer Price Index for October. Fed officials Phillip Jefferson, Michael Barr, Loretta Mester, and Austan Goolsbee deliver remarks. The National Federation of Independent Business releases its Small Business Optimism Index for October. China\u2019s National Bureau of Statistics releases October data on industrial production, retail sales, fixed-asset investment and its unemployment rate for that month.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/closw2e3b00082e69am31n5gb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      <strong>Wednesday: <\/strong>Earnings from Target. The UK\u2019s Office for National Statistics releases October inflation data. The US Labor Department releases its Producer Price Index for October. The US Commerce Department releases October retail sales figures.
