\n (CNN) \u2014 <\/strong>Embattled GOP Rep. George Santos refused to take off the table a potential plea deal with the federal government\u00a0and acknowledged mistakes in his handling of key issues outlined in the criminal indictments against him even as he forcefully defended himself.\n <\/p>\n

\n In a wide-ranging interview with CNN, the New York\u00a0Republican\u00a0blamed \u201cstupidity\u201d and \u201cinsecurity\u201d for his extensive fabrications about his biography,\u00a0but insisted\u00a0he is working to prove his\u00a0debunked claim\u00a0that his grandparents fled the Holocaust. Santos said he will \u201cabsolutely\u201d run for reelection in 2024 even if he is expelled from Congress. He also attempted to distance himself from his former campaign treasurer who\u00a0has pleaded guilty\u00a0to conspiracy to defraud the United States and has implicated Santos in the process.\n <\/p>\n

\n Santos,\u00a0a 35-year-old freshman\u00a0congressman under siege, has remained defiant in the face of mounting legal issues and calls\u00a0to resign.\u00a0He\u00a0survived a second attempt to oust him last week when a House vote on a resolution to expel him failed. But some of his fellow New York Republicans, who pushed\u00a0for\u00a0the vote against him, say they believe GOP holdouts will support expulsion after the House Ethics Committee, which is investigating Santos, releases its report.\n <\/p>\n

\n Santos summed up what the past year has been like for him in one word: \u201cHell.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI lost privacy. I lost the ability to just have a normal life,\u201d he said. \u201cNot having the ability to just, you know, take my husband, and let\u2019s go for a walk in the park without the fear of having some psycho try to, I don\u2019t know, hurt me or him.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n The congressman\u00a0has pleaded not guilty to\u00a023 federal charges, including\u00a0allegations of fraud related to Covid-19 unemployment benefits, misusing campaign funds and lying about his personal finances on House disclosure reports. But when asked in the interview about the charges he is facing, Santos conceded that he had made missteps.\n <\/p>\n

\n According to prosecutors, Santos made false statements on multiple financial disclosure reports to the House of Representatives during his two congressional races.\n <\/p>\n

\n Pressed on the allegations, Santos said, \u201cWere there mistakes made on those forms? Now\u00a0I know they were. Were they malicious? No. Did I understand the reporting date? So, this is from last year to current date this year? No, I didn\u2019t understand how that worked,\u00a0and I\u2019m a new candidate and I\u2019m sorry that mistakes were made.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI didn\u2019t understand the forms. That\u2019s just plain and simple,\u201d he went on to say. When asked whether he filled out the forms, he said, \u201cWith some help, but most of them yes.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Santos\u00a0is also accused\u00a0of fraudulently applying for unemployment benefits, with prosecutors alleging he falsely claimed to be unemployed in an application for a pandemic-related unemployment insurance program. Because of\u00a0repeated false assertions he is alleged to have made to the unemployment program, Santos\u00a0received $24,744 in benefits, according to prosecutors.\n <\/p>\n

\n When asked about those charges, Santos said that he is \u201cnot admitting anything\u201d and that he did what he thought he \u201cwas qualified for.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThere\u2019s people out there who have gone through this process of overtaking a check or two or whatever the case is and then just having to pay it back. Nobody gets criminally indicted. That\u2019s crazy,\u201d he said.\n <\/p>\n

\n Pressed on why he claimed to be unemployed when he was not, according to prosecutors, Santos said, \u201cThat\u2019s not true,\u201d but then said, \u201cI had my wages severely cut.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n In the interview, Santos also did not rule out a potential plea deal.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI\u2019m not saying I\u2019m not ruling out \u2013 as of right now, it\u2019s not on the table,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m not exploring any of that right now. Those conversations are yet to be had \u2026 right now I\u2019m pretty focused on my defense.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Among the most controversial of Santos\u2019 disputed representations of his background is the claim his grandparents were Jewish refugees who fled Europe during the Holocaust. Santos, who has previously self-identified as \u201chalf Jewish\u201d and a \u201cLatino Jew,\u201d told CNN on Friday he\u00a0never meant\u00a0he was Jewish, but said he\u2019s spent months working to obtain records proving his ancestors fled the Holocaust.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThis is the biggest lift that I\u2019ve had to do my entire life, but that\u2019s something I\u2019m gonna prove before I die,\u201d Santos said.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI am working on finishing getting the last pieces of it, specifically the piece in Brazil, where they go to Brazil and then have documents forged so that they can blend in and all of that stuff,\u201d he added.\n <\/p>\n

\n CNN previously reported\u00a0that Santos\u2019 claims his grandparents fled the Holocaust as Ukrainian Jewish refugees\u00a0from Belgium\u00a0are contradicted by records on Jewish refugees, interviews with genealogists and family histories compiled by genealogy websites.\n <\/p>\n

\n As recently as November 2022, Santos said he was \u201cvery proud\u201d of his \u201cJewish heritage\u201d during an appearance with the Jewish News Syndicate. Yet Santos maintains he has never misrepresented himself as Jewish and only made references to his claimed Jewish lineage.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI never said I was Jewish. I would always joke for years and say I\u2019m \u2018Jew-ish.\u2019 I was raised Roman Catholic,\u201d Santos said. \u201cThis is something I\u2019ve always made very clear. I\u2019m Catholic. I come from a Jewish family. Here\u2019s my Jewish family\u2019s history. Why is this now a problem?\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Yet despite questions about his connection to Judaism, Santos\u00a0stood by\u00a0his familial ties to the Holocaust while stressing he never meant to offend members of the Jewish community. His disputed claims of Jewish ancestry have sparked\u00a0a backlash from Jewish constituents in his home state of New York.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI never intended to hurt anybody. I never wanted anybody to feel like I misrepresented myself or my family\u2019s heritage,\u201d he said. \u201cI will not stop working until I have every single part of that put together.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Santos\u2019 former campaign treasurer, Nancy Marks,\u00a0pleaded guilty last month\u00a0to one count of conspiracy to defraud the United States and implicated Santos in an alleged scheme to overstate his campaign\u2019s fundraising totals to draw additional investment from Republican Party officials. Marks said she took action \u201cin agreement with\u201d Santos and \u201cfor his benefit.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI did these things in agreement with co-conspirator #1,\u201d Marks said in court, referring to Santos, \u201cfor his benefit and to obtain money for his campaign by artificially inflating his funds to meet thresholds set by a national political committee.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Santos denied knowingly misrepresenting his campaign\u2019s fundraising totals and at first suggested he was not responsible for handling his campaign\u2019s financial records.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI never, ever submitted or even looked at a single report,\u201d Santos said. \u201cI\u2019m a candidate, candidates do not handle money, candidates do not handle finances, candidates do not handle filings. I don\u2019t even know what the FEC filing system looks like.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Yet Santos later said, \u201cThe\u00a0buck should stop at the candidate, that\u2019s true.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n When asked about what Marks said in court, Santos said, \u201cPeople will say whatever they have to say cut whatever deal they have to cut in order to save their hide. And this isn\u2019t surprising.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI\u2019m not accusing her of anything. All I\u2019m saying is she has her story, I\u2019m going to come with my facts,\u00a0and I\u2019m going to tell my side of the story,\u201d he added.\n <\/p>\n

\n Santos\u00a0said he would \u201cabsolutely\u201d\u00a0run in 2024 if he is expelled. The New York Republican said he believes he could win a primary and projected confidence for his prospects in a general election.\n <\/p>\n

\n When pressed on his extensive fabrications about his resume and biography, Santos said, \u201cI\u2019ve already told you that it\u2019s insecurity, stupidity. I don\u2019t know. Look, I\u2019m human. We make mistakes. I\u2019ve apologized and I will continue to apologize profusely for this and with remorse.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n But he argued that his constituents didn\u2019t vote for him based on his biography as he downplayed past fabrications.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cNobody knew my biography. Nobody opened my biography who voted for me in the campaign,\u201d he said.\n <\/p>\n

\n Santos said he didn\u2019t regret running for office but does regret \u201csome of the stupidity and human mistakes\u201d he\u2019s made. And he suggested he\u2019s benefitted from not serving on committees as a result of his legal problems, including by being able to handle issues such as passport services for his constituents.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI sit in my office, I talk. I take my constituents\u2019 calls. I do that, I\u2019m not serving on committees. So there\u2019s no excuse for me to not say, \u2018Hey the congressman\u2019s busy,\u2019\u201d Santos said.\n <\/p>\n
